Abstract
The following article presents an overview of recent research in the field of ‘study abroad’. The research is divided along common methodological approaches: quantitative methods (descriptive and explanatory research), quantitative and qualitative methods based on acculturation models, and qualitative methods (exploratory research). Based on the notion of experience, a systematization of the research is proposed focused on optimization of experience versus experience of contingency.
