Abstract
The article recalls the importance of the social protest movements of the 1970s for the emergence of environmental education. It discusses education for sustainable development (ESD) as a political program and outlines the transformation process of knowledge about the connections between economy and ecology and about the global effects of an economic system oriented towards growth and profit maximization in the course of its institutionalisation.
