Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is attracting growing interest as an educational policy concept in educational institutions, science, and civil society. There are countless initiatives and institutions, nationally and internationally, that practice ESD. They have two aspects in common: the expectation that knowledge will produce desired action and the orientation towards Gestaltungskompetenz. The article discusses whether a lack of knowledge is the crucial obstacle to a societal transformation towards sustainability, describes competence orientation as a form of subjectification of sustainability, and argues that both contribute to depoliticization.
