Abstract

The benefits, function and content of good practice portals in health promotion are being discussed throughout Europe, and a large number of different good practice portals have already been developed that differ in terms of content and methodology. This article discusses how good practice portals can support informed decision-making in health promotion and whether they can be used to further develop effective measures. The Austrian Health Promotion Strategy 2024–2028 stipulates that implementers should be guided by good practices and promote their dissemination. The Competence Centre for Future Health Promotion was therefore commissioned to develop a prototype concept for a good practice portal which is being implemented and tested on two knowledge platforms and which should also serve as the basis for the further development of a database of the Austrian Health Promotion Fund. After researching existing concepts and portals in Europe, discussions were held with various owners of existing portals. A survey and evaluation scheme for the presentation of good practices was developed in an iterative process of research, testing, feedback and adaptation. As a result, an assessment scheme with four overarching categories and related criteria is presented as well as a summary of discussion points relevant to the development of good practice portals.
