The AfD and Its School Policy Positions on Curriculum Content

Abstract

The political party “Alternative für Deutschland ” (“Alternative for Germany”, AfD) strategically uses education policy to enforce an authoritarian-nationalist cultural agenda. Based on a qualitative content analysis of election programs from the state associations in Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia, the article demonstrates how the party frames Curriculum contents – for instance, through the rejection of diversity, the re-nationalization of history education, the promotion of national identity and the restriction of critical-democratic debate under the pretext of political neutrality.
