Abstract
Due to the historical role that laicism played in the definitive establishment of the republican school system in France through the introduction of the state elementary school at the end of the 19th century, the education of future citizens (“citoyens”) was assigned primarily to schools and not to other institutions or organizations. The following article addresses the question how civic education has been understood in France historically and in the present.
